Grant Mason Connection – Sun, 27th of May

The Hamilton Jazz Society presents The Grant Mason Connection in concert, Sunday 27th May, 4.30-7.30, at the Waikato Commerce Club, 197 Collingwood Street, Hamilton.

The Grant Mason Connection, assembles a group of six immensely talented musicians, to bring us an afternoon of quality jazz.

Grant Mason, trumpet and flugelhorn horn, has had a varied musical career for the past 40 years in Hamilton, from brass bands to pit orchestras, rock and cover bands to a variety of jazz and big bands. With this band Grant has brought together some friends old and new, playing a mix of jazz standards modern and old.

Bill Forrest, tenor, alto and soprano saxes, has been on the Hamilton music scene since the mid 1970s, playing in a range of rock and jazz ensembles. Bill’s musical passion is as a jazz saxophonist. He and Grant have played in various groups alongside each other for some 32 years.

Urlwyn Trebilco, guitar, has played in several rock bands in the Waikato area, and in recent years has focused on jazz, playing a wide range of styles from 50’s and 60’s jazz to more edgy funk and jazz rock. Urlwyn has also written a number of original compositions.

Tony Sisam, bass guitar and upright bass, has also played in a range of bands around Hamilton, and provides both tasty and funky bass lines in a range of jazz styles. Tony is an experienced guitar and bass teacher, and has played alongside Urlwyn for several years.

Hanna de Coster, drums, is living back in Hamilton after attaining her degree in jazz at NZ School of Music, then spending 10 years teaching and playing in London, followed by a year on cruise ships. Hannah is a drum teacher in the secondary school itinerant music scheme. This is Hannah’s first performance at the Hamilton Jazz Society.

Guest vocalist Nataalia Lunson hails from Tauranga and is a regular singer with Torchsongs as well as other groups, including the Tauranga Big Band. Nataalia is developing her own unique jazz singing style and is a totally infectious person to share a stage with, and we welcome her to the Hamilton Jazz Society.
