HJS Newsletter October 2015

We miss you! Where are you hiding?

Numbers have been down so low each Sunday we are making a major loss each time- which of course we CAN'T SUSTAIN. If we don't get more than 100 people through the door each time we can't afford the small bands, let alone save up to bring in the big or extra special ones!  This means we need to CHANGE! Your committee will be holding a special meeting in November to discuss what opportunities we have to keep the society alive in a sustainable way. To help us know what would get you back to your Jazz Society- tell us  at the October meeting! There will be a SURVEY on the door. HELP US KEEP OUR AWESOME SOCIETY ALIVE!

JFS and Banda de la Casa

What a nice start to a Sunday of jazz with JFS (new to Hamilton Jazz Society), with the fine singing from their lead vocalist and alto player Hinemoa and the 4 great instrumentalists, the band took us on a great 50-minute cruise. A nice refreshing change to see a new band taking some old standards and making them their own. Outstanding performances by all involved thanks JFS for coming along and entertaining us! We hope you will do more for us again.

Next we heard from Banda de la Casa with our very own Maciek on guitar man: he really knows how to draw you in and spellbind you with his awesome licks and improvisation. The diversity of the Hamilton jazz scene is exemplified by Carlos Pla on bass, with his rhythmic, latin, pulsating bass lines. With Freddy Limbert on skins captivating us with his awesome rhythmic playing style, we were in for a treat, but when supplemented by the super-talented Grant Mason on trumpet and flugelhorn, we were blown away! Their awesome renditions of original tunes and some great standards this is what modern jazz is all about. Thanks Banda de la Casa and their special guest for coming along and giving those who turned out to support the Jazz Society and you the chance to hear some top quality Waikato Jazz.
