Next meeting:
Joe Carbery Swingtet
supported by Paul McIsaac
Returning to us again, the Hamilton Jazz Society are proud to present The Joe Carbery Swingtet in concert, on Sunday 28thApril, 4.30-7.30pm, at the Waikato Commerce Club, 197 Collingwood Street, Hamilton.
The Joe Carbery Swingtet plays in the style of the small groups of the Swing Era but is firmly in the present - "Modern Cool Swing Music." Count Basie, Chet Baker, Lester Young and Gerry Mulligan are just a few of the influences that may be heard in the music of the Swingtet. The swing repertoire is leavened with Latin American rhythms - what Jelly Roll Morton called "the Spanish tinge"- and an infusion of the Cool School of the American West Coast. “In Cool Jazz the most important aspect of the musical performance is the lyricism and the tones of the instruments.”
Founded on a solid rhythm section of pianist John Wilcox, bassist Stuart Lawrence and the vastly experienced Jimmy Gibb on drums, with Joe Carbery on baritone saxophone and vocals.
The Rotorua Jazz Society review, said this of The Swingtet - "Life is full of surprises and the Joe Carbery band turned out to be one. And a very pleasant surprise at that. Joe on alto sax lead a very competent group through a selection of mostly classic jazz numbers, made famous by some of the big names but also by a few of the lesser known saxophonists of days past. The audience was entranced with many of the selections, which were eminently danceable. Dave Cown."
Our supporting artist this month is popular keyboardist Paul McIsaac.
Do join us for a relaxed afternoon of great, danceable music; a good chance to wind down the weekend.
Dinner, snacks and refreshments are available for purchase from the Club.
